How to fix a wobbly G-Suite handle

If the push handle on your G-Suite wheelchair starts to feel a little loose or wobbly, don’t worry! It’s a very common adjustment and a quick fix. Think of it like tightening a screw on a pair of glasses. A couple quick turns usually does the trick.

You can easily resolve this in just a few minutes with one simple tool…

What You’ll Need

You only need:

  • A 4mm Allen key (usually supplied with the chair, but any 4mm key will work perfectly)

Step 1 – Identify the wobble

Before reaching for your Allen key, let’s see where the movement is coming from.

  • Hold the handle and gently move it back and forth
  • Look closely at the joint where the handle connects to the frame
  • What to look for: usually, you’ll see a tiny bit of space at the joint. This is where we need to tighten things up.

Step 2 – Try Tightening the Outer Bolt First

Always start with the easiest solution!

  • Insert the Allen key into the outer bolt
  • Turn clockwise to tighten
  • Give it a test. Wiggle the handle again. In many cases, this 30-second adjustment is all you need to get back on the go.

Step 3 – Access the Inner Bolt (If Needed)

If the handle is still loose, we need to try another quick fix.

  • Loosen or remove the upper/outer bolt
  • This reveals the inner fixing point hidden underneath
  • Top Tip: keep the bolt in a safe spot (like your pocket or a cup), they have a habit of rolling away when given the opportunity!

Step 4 – Tighten the Inner Bolt

Now we can get to the heart of the handle problem.

  • Insert the Allen key into the inner bolt
  • Tighten firmly (but do not overtighten), you want it to be snug, not forced
  • This is the main fixing point, so tightening this usually removes the bulk of the movement.

Step 5 – Reassemble and Final Tighten

Now that the foundation is secure, let’s put it back together.

  • Refit the outer bolt you removed in step 3.
  • Tighten both bolts securely
  • Check the handle one last time to make sure that the wobble has disappeared

Final Check

  • The stress test: push down and pull back on the handle with a bit of weight to ensure it feels secure.
  • Check the other side: we would always recommend checking the handle on the other side as well, just to make sure that they are both equally secure.

Practical Tips from our team

  • Start simple: always try the outer bolt first!! It’s the most common culprit and saves you from taking other things apart.
  • Easy does it: avoid overtightening. If you feel a lot of resistance, stop there to avoid damaging the threads.
  • Still moving? If you’ve tightened both bolts and there is still movement, it might be time to check for worn components. Feel free to reach out to us via phone, email or popping into the shop if you’re unsure and we will be more than happy to help!
